A long history

A theatre group has been operating in Sumner for nearly 100 years. First historic photos of the group date back to 1924, when the group put on pantomimes.

STG started its Cabaret-style of variety show over 50 years ago.

2022 – There were no milestones.

2021 – New constitution, new name, winding up of SCC parent organisation.

2020 – Covid-19 prevents group putting on a show.

2019 – STG finishes the new hall fitout with full lighting grid

2018 – STG first show in the Matuku Takotako Sumner Centre – “Come cruisin’ with STG”

2017 – Matuku Takotako Sumner Centre opens in August. STG puts on final show in old school hall

2016 – 2014 - Our show moves to a winter season, operating out of the Sumner School old hall, Wiggins Street.

2012 – Show celebrates 50 years of Sumner Community Centre (with no centre)

2011 – February earthquakes damage old community centre beyond repair. STG moves to Sumner School old hall – puts on a best of two-night special.

Special fundraiser shows – Mark Lane Kidney transplant (2012), Sacha Coburn breast cancer show (201?)

2010 – September earthquakes mid-rehearsal. We go off-site to rehearse, but are back in the hall to do our last show in the old Sumner Hall (Nov-Dec)

2008 – Sumner Community Centre trading as Sumner Community Theatre.

1962 - Sumner Community Centre Incorporated officially registered
